History of The Green Schools Program in Our School
The Green Schools flag flying at the front of our school is a symbol of the efforts our school community is making to promote environmental awareness and to create a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable future for everyone. It is a long-term, whole school programme. In 2007, we embarked on this exciting journey.
The first theme was Litter and Waste Management.
This theme focussed on managing waste and reducing litter. We earned our first flag in May 2009.
The second theme was Energy. This theme created an awareness of energy efficiency in our school and explored ways to conserve energy. We renewed our flag in May 2011.
The third theme was Water. This theme highlighted the importance of water conservation and using water responsibly. We earned our flag in May 2013.
The fourth theme was Travel. We encouraged our school community to walk, cycle, car pool or scoot to school to reduce the volume of traffic approaching the school. This was a fun-filled experience for all. We renewed our flag in May 2015.
The fifth theme was Biodiversity which raised awareness of the interdependence of plants, animals and habitats. We renewed our flag in May 2017.
The focus of the Green Schools themes widened from local to global – Global Citizenship.
The Global Citizenship themes are linked to the previous five themes which are explored throughout the world.
Global Citizenship Litter and Waste revised the first theme and explored how it influenced our Global community. We renewed our flag in May 2019.
We are currently studying Global Citizenship Energy which again is revising the second theme of Energy.
We are trying to increase awareness of energy issues globally while also improving energy efficiency locally.
We are learning about the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, Fairtrade, Carbon Footprint and Climate Change.
We are very proud of having renewed our Green Schools flag every two years. With continued commitment to the programme, we hope to renew our flag again before the end of this school year.
